Steward Patricia Hennigar: “The employer gave us a very difficult period in the negotiations, but we stayed strong and we finally got excellent wage increases and many other important contractual improvements for our members. Thank God for our Union. The provisional agreement was ratified by an overwhelming majority. The momentum did not stop. Shortly before the holiday period, more than 150 janitors from four Untermainland shopping centres joined the union and voted for the collective agreement for Alpine workers at the Pacific Centre.
The needs of our customers are not 9 to 5. The work day is long and there are afternoon, evening and weekend shifts that need to be covered. This is not a part-time or filling job. The pandemic has shown it the advantage of the Union. Sandford says, “Being part of a union means that our voices and concerns are heard by management. Without a union, management usually has the final say in everything. As a long-term caregiver who works during a global health pandemic, this is very important to me. We all work very hard to look after the residents, and we have to make sure that we are also taken care of and that we have a real voice at work. The campaign also launched unionsareessential.ca, a site that will connect workers to SEIU organizers on site in their area. The campaign has already won two. The main workers at two sites in North Vancouver, Lonsdale and Tsawwassen Quay Markets, following a successful union organization and certification vote, are celebrating the whole thing in the midst of the COVID-19 epidemic. Workers are now negotiating their first contracts with their employer, Dexterra. Congratulations to Enrique Turnainsky, who is retiring this year.
