the concept is simple, the four chords are understandable, the results are undeniable… However, the disciplined practice of consciousness and action is a monumental challenge… not because it is complicated, but monumental to achieve, because it requires a complete description of your deepest thoughts and actions. The constant presence of the mind and continuous concentration will begin to unravel the lifespan of the unhealthy conditioning with which we all felt comfortable. There are thousands of agreements that you have made with yourself, with other people, with your dream of life, with God, with society, with your parents, with your spouse, with your children. But the main agreements are the ones you have with yourself. In these agreements, you tell yourself who you are, what you feel, what you believe and how you behave. The result is what you call your personality. In these agreements, you say, “It`s me. That`s what I think. I can do certain things, and some things I can`t do.
It`s a reality, it`s imagination. it is possible, it is impossible. A single agreement is not such a problem, but we have many agreements that make us suffer, that make us fail in life. If you want to lead a life of joy and accomplishment, you must find the courage to break the agreements that are based on fear and that claim your personal power. Agreements that come from fear require us to expend a lot of energy, but the agreements that come from love help us to save energy and even to produce energy. This book is a bit “woo woo”, not bashing at all, but I could see how hard parts of it are to get through for someone who is not in trouble. The basis of the four agreements is strong and so important. Beyond the new old woo woo tone of the book are four tenants who are so important and important to succeed personally and professionally. The four chords are simple and easy to follow and will serve you well in life. You need a very strong will to adopt these four agreements — but if you can start living with these agreements, the transformation of your life will be incredible. You will see the drama of hell disappear before your eyes. Instead of living in a dream of hell, you will create a new dream, your personal dream from heaven.
Each of us is born with a certain personal strength, which we rebuild every day after our tranquillity. Unfortunately, we first spend all our personal strength to create all these agreements and then to respect those agreements. Our personal power is dissipated by all the agreements we have created, and the result is that we feel powerless. We have just enough power to survive every day, because most of them are used to maintain the chords that hold us back in the dream of the planet. How can we change the whole dream of our lives if we don`t have the power to change even the slightest agreement? Although the content and arrangements are useful and relevant to the 21st century, I had the impression that there were many very religious and supra-spiritual elements in the stories. Our personal power is based on the agreements we make and we often make these agreements to please others instead of being true to ourselves. In doing so, we will give you our personal strength. In the Four Accords, it is a matter of regaining our personal power by being authentic and holding on to our true self.
The four chords are: 1) Be impeccable in your word, 2) Don`t take anything personally, 3) Don`t make assumptions, and 4) Always do your best. These agreements are certainly simple, but far from simple. Ruiz encourages readers to practice these chords every day and forgive us if we are not perfect. Effort is the most important. This book is a quick read (or listen) and should be read several times if you really want to keep your chords with yourself. This four-colour illustrated edition of The Four Agreements with paintings by Nicholas Wilton celebrates the 15th anniversary of a classic of personal growth.
